The Power of Concentration

Concentration is like a muscle - it needs training

Oswaldo Koch, MBA, PMP, P.Eng. / Fitness Trainer - Martial Arts Instructor

Everyone wants to do something meaningful and worthwhile, but there are few that will have the power of concentration to put forward the effort to go ahead and do it. If we cannot direct our thoughts, wishes, studies and actions, we cannot possibly achieve our goals. If we are impulsive, worried and irritated, we are weakening our power of concentration.

Concentration means success, because we are better able to govern our thoughts, desires, emotions and actions. Only the trained person can develop skills and faculties in a concentrated manner. Like a muscle, our mental concentration becomes stronger and efficient with daily exercise, and this almost invariably improves our chances for success.

Here are 5 practical ways to develop the power of concentration:

Reading and handwriting is kind for concentration and effective learning.

Work when you work, and play when you play

  • Create rituals to overcome distractions and boost your concentration
  • Feel that you can accomplish anything you undertake
  • Use the Pomodoro technique to get more done in less time
  • Spend time in nature - Take breaks away from your computer or smartphones
  • Give your brain time to rest and recharge

Spending time in nature stimulates creativity and problem solving skills.

Start the day feeling refreshed, alert and focused

  • Form the habit of going to bed early and getting up early
  • Practice deep breathing for relaxation and stress relief
  • Avoid caffeine and start the day with a healthy breakfast
  • Make time for exercise to develop mental and physical vitality
  • Improve your nutrition

Playing chess and memory games helps to increase brain activity and boost concentration.

Be careful what you wish for

  • Be clear and specific with what you want to achieve
  • Make a mental picture of what you want and take action until it materializes
  • Think positive thoughts and take positive actions towards your goals
  • Track your progress and improvements
  • Make sure you have fun to increase your appetite for more challenges

Avoiding processed food and sugar drinks prevents memory loss and mood swings.

Pay the price for success

  • Do not shrink from a hard task
  • The harder the task, the greater the reward
  • Take massive actions on your goals
  • Stop dissipating your energy on distractions and turn your attention to achieve your goals
  • Pay attention to details

Exercising daily is shown to boost productivity and concentration.

Practice mindfulness

  • Practice meditation to improve inner peace and mental concentration
  • Maintain a good posture to feel strong and focused
  • Practice mindful reading, allowing for a more profound understanding
  • Use a book holder and take notes while you read
  • Develop your reading comprehension skills

Mindful Reading Exercise: Before reading a book, breathe slowly, filling the lungs comfortably full of fresh air; hold this as long as you can without straining yourself; then exhale slowly. Now think how quiet and relaxed you are. Just think of yourself as getting ready to receive knowledge and ideas far greater than you have ever received before. Now close your eyes for ten seconds and let your mind assist you to accomplish what you wish. Don't let any doubts or fears enter. Just feel that what you wish is going to manifest. Read a book for twenty minutes and then write down a few bullet points that summarize what you've read and make it personal if you can. The chances are that at first you will not remember very many details, but with a little practice you will be able to write a very good account of what you have read.

Read with pleasure and concentration
