Eyes Relaxation

“Open your eyes, look within. Are you satisfied with the life you're living?"
--
Bob Marley

There was a time when we were able to see the world perfectly. Unfortunately, more than ever, we are using our eyes to stare at small type and images on computer screens, televisions, and cell phones - which leads to eye fatigue and limited vision. Near and farsightedness are the result of varying-shaped eyeballs that cause light to focus in front of or behind the retina. But diminished eyesight does not have to be permanent. Daily relaxation of your eyes can reshape our eyeballs and restore good vision.

Many of us are spending an average of 8-10 hours in front of computer or TV, either for watching movies, playing games or doing personal or professional work. Just like any activity, reading for several hours puts tremendous pressure on our eyes and eye muscles. Our eyes have to constantly focus and refocus while staring at the computer monitor, and gradually we end up tired eyes and vision problems. Relaxing your eyes is the first line of defense against vision problems. So what should we do to relax our eyes?

We all know that we need to relax our eyes while working on the computer but we either just don't care or we just don't know how to take care of our eyes. This article gives five effective and yet easy tips to relax your eyes and improve your eyesight.

Technique One - Eyes Exercises.

Take a 5 minute break every hour and practice the following routine:

  1. Massage your temples. Using your thumb knuckles, massage your temples in small circles, 10 times in one direction and 10 in the other. Repeat the massage every 15 minutes to prevent eye fatigue.
  2. Blink your eyes every second. Blinking is the best exercise for our eyes. It relaxes them by providing moisture to the eyes and preventing your eyes from drying. So blink your eyes 60 times.
  3. Warm your eyes. Rub your palms together to create heat, and then place them against your eyes for five seconds. Repeat this three times.
  4. Roll your eyes. Start by looking up and then slowly circle 10 times clockwise and 10 times counterclockwise.
  5. Focus your vision. Cover one of your eyes. Hold a red pen at arm's length, keeping your eye focused on the pen, slowly bring the pen closer until it's about 2 inches away from your nose. Then slowly move it back. Repeat this exercise 10 times per eye.
  6. Close your eyes and relax for 1 minute. Keeping your eyes close, roll your eyes to relax eye muscles and deep breathe for 1 minute every hour if possible.

Statistics indicate that a little more than 98% of all 6 year old children have perfect eyesight. However, by the time we are 16 years old, more than 25% of us need corrective lenses. We either just didn't care or we just didn't know how to take care of our eyes. Exercising your eyes is the best way to keep your eyes in normal shape for a perfect vision.

Technique Two: Eyes Relaxation

During the day practice the following routine:

  1. Refresh your eyes - If your eyes feel overly tired, lie down and place cooling cucumber slices over your eyelids. Keep cucumber slices in refrigerator and once a day put them on your eyes for 5 few minutes to release eye tension as needed.
  2. Take a mini-nap - Put your head back, close your eyes, and relax for 3 minutes.
  3. Wash your eyes with cool water - Wash your eyes 5 times a day or least at the beginning and end of each day.
  4. Relax your eyes by looking away from your desk - Just look as far away as possible and blink your eyes for 1 minute. Then get back to work. This will relax your eyes and prevent your eyes from quickly tiring out.
  5. Get up from the chair - Take a 5 minute break every hour. Have glass of water. Stretch a little. Just get away from the computer. It will not only give your eyes a refreshing break but also give your body and mind a break.
  6. Get enough sleep - Resting is essential for eye health. Sleep allows your eyes to fully rest, repair, and recover. Insufficient sleep may weaken your vision, so shoot for 8 hours of sound sleep a night.
  7. Relax your muscles - Practice the relaxation and body massage techniques from the program The Power of Relaxation. Daily body relaxation will help your brain and eyes to relax and gradually restore normal vision.

A computer is a necessity of modern living. Staring at a computer screen for too long can cause:

  • Dry eyes
  • Blurry vision
  • Headaches

This is an indication of physical damage to our eyes. It's important that we take good care of our eyes to avoid damaging the shape of our eyes.
