 THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“Leave all the afternoon for exercise and recreation, which are as necessary as reading. I will rather say more necessary because health is worth more than learning.”

- Thomas Jefferson quotes (American 3rd US President (1801-09). Author of the Declaration of Independence. 1762-1826)

Happy 2007 - May you achieve what you aspire and may all your dreams come true!

In celebration of the new year, each year swimmers plunge into freezing cold water at various "Polar Bear Swim" throughout Vancouver. Brrrrrrr!!! It's become a tradition for many crazy people, including me.

Jumping into the ice-cold water is "…like someone squeezing your chest. You can't get enough air". Whether a reason is right or wrong can only be decided when there is sufficient knowledge. The spectators have the expectation of seeing and having a good time, and the continuation of a yearly tradition. The spectators get the swimmers pumped up and motivated because the swimmers know that the spectators and fans will be rooting them on every bone chilling stroke of the swim. Most important, the participants have confidence about the benefits of jumping into the ice-cold water and do not care what others think.

The Vancouver Polar Bear Swim Club is one of the largest and oldest Polar Bear Clubs in the world. Its initial swim was in 1920 when a small number of hardy swimmers took the plunge into English Bay on New Year's Day. Led by their founder, Peter Pantages, the swim has grown from around 10 swimmers in that year to the record number of 2,128 official entries in 2000.

The swim takes place at 2:30pm on the first day of each New Year. Costumes and the Peter Pantages Memorial 100 yard swim race are the highlights of this event. For me, the swim takes place at 7:00 am when the water is brutally cold.

This year, I was impressed when I saw a person in full wetsuit swimming for more than 30 minutes. The morning was very cold and rainy, but I had trained every day during 2006 for this very moment. Hundreds of push-ups a day and 3 minutes-cold shower every morning was my daily routine. I trained like an athlete does - proper hydration, natural nutrition and daily core training.

Suddenly, The swimmer came out of the water and to my surprise, the swimmer was a women - she had a beautiful strong and lean body. While talking to her, I found out that she was 56 years old. "I swim in the ocean for about 30 minutes 4 times a week...how about your?", she asked me. "Shame on me, I only do it once a year...without wetsuit", I said. "I see...you do the polar swim....you mus be crazy", she smile and then she continue walking along the beach.

Without hesitation, I did 100 push-ups (non stop) and then I plunged into the cold water for 5 minutes swim. Brrrrrrr!!! While spectators opted not to experience the water, I felt stronger and revitalized for doing it. The reason as to why some people jump into freezing, cold water is because of their motto: "When you start your millennium at 0 degrees, there is no place to go but up". For most people, the Polar Bear Swim is the positive beginning of a new year. For me, the Polar Bear Swim is the culmination of 365 days of commitment to optimal fitness - proper hydration, natural nutrition and daily core training.

My advice to you is to start your training now and do the Polar Bear Swim for 2008. You don't need to be an Olympic athlete, you only need to be an athlete of your mind and have the discipline to achieve optimal fitness by practicing proper body hydration, natural nutrition and daily core training. You do it every day for 365 and very likely you and I will met one day to enjoy doing 100 push-ups and swim 5 minutes in the freezing cold water of Vancouver.

Live a healthy life and may all your dreams come true!

REFLECTIONS

Manifesting any of your goals

A young man came to Socrates seeking great wisdom and enlightenment. He asked the young man how badly he wanted this knowledge in which the man expressed his deep desire.

Socrates took the man down to the river and told him to look at his reflection in the water. Upon doing this Socrates grabbed the back of the man's head and shoved it under the water. Dismayed, the young man holding his breath waited for the crazy sage to pull his head back up to reveal some enlightening lesson.

After a short time he began running out of breath and it appeared that this master had no intention of loosening his grip and was trying to drown him. So the young man finally using every ounce of his strength and being freed himself from this death grip.

After gasping for air Socrates looked at the young man and asked "What thoughts were going through your mind just before you freed yourself?" He replied, "all I could think about was getting that breath of air." To that Socrates replied is how strong your desire has to be for spiritual enlightenment.

And this is true of manifesting any of your goals.

Setting your fitness goals
By Oswaldo Koch

The first step towards creating PROSPERITY is to set your fitness goals. As a professional speaker and fitness trainer, many people tell me that they would love to do what I do for a living. When they ask me how I got there, I tell them that I'm goal-oriented. Successful people are intensely goal-oriented; they have the ability to identify what they want, make a plan to attain it and use the best tools, resources and strategies to achieve their goals.

When most people set goals, they want and expect instant results. When this doesn't happen, these people become insecure and stop pursuing their goals; this is also what happens to people who embark on unrealistic fitness programs.

Setting goals is not just about making a list of the things that you want or wish to happen. A goal is a very specific aspiration or ambition that emerges from your desires, beliefs and values, as shown in the diagram below.

The process of setting goals begins by determining your desires, beliefs and values. For example, if you are setting fitness goals you have to ask yourself what do I desire about fitness? Do you want to be lean, flexible, stronger or more coordinated? Then, ask yourself do I believe in my fitness potential? Are you willing to exercise everyday? Are you willing to eat healthy food? Next, how much do I value fitness? How important is fitness for you? What are your priorities in life?

Finally, make sure that each of your fitness goals has a clear and definite fitness purpose. For example, if my goal is to improve flexibility, the purpose behind this may be to become a dancer instructor.

Based on your desires, beliefs and values, you have to make your goals very specific. Each goal must state clearly "this is what I want and this is exactly how I want it". The easy way to think about your goals is by writing down a positive phrase such as the following:

I'm looking forward to having 6 pack abs in 3 months from now because I want to be lean and healthy for the rest of my life.

The goal in this example is very specific (to have 6 packs abs). There is a clear deadline (3 months from now), and it has a clear purpose (to be lean and healthy for the rest of my life).

Each day of your life should contribute in a meaningful way to the achievement of your goals. To have a worthy goal means to always have a clear picture of your final destination. Setting a clear goal means using your imagination to work backwards and see all the steps needed to take you to your goal.

Your fitness goals should reflect your passion, your fitness purpose and your vision about what you want out of life. Clear and specific goals will determine your success in life.

  TIPS AND TRICKS

Visualization and Relaxation
By Barbara Kantz

When the pressure seems to be getting to you, don't reach for the aspirin bottle. Try one of these instant stress relievers. Take six deep breaths. Slowly breathe through your nose and out your mouth. Visit the Bahamas or any other pleasant place through your imagination. Visualize the scene in detail.

Hug someone. Four hugs every day will do a lot to calm you down. Change your scene. Walk to the window, watch the birds, take a stroll down the hall. Go outside and breathe deeply for two minutes.

Exercise and stretching will improve your mind. Jog up the staircase. Find something or someone who will make you laugh. Stress can often come from taking yourself or your task too seriously. Ask yourself what is the worst possible thing that could happen if you made a mistake or missed the deadline.

Lastly, change your focus. Think about your out of work or class life and focus on what you'll do this weekend or this evening.

The Mindset For Fitness & Prosperity

by Oswaldo Koch

Henry Ford said it best..."Whether you think you can or you can't... you're right!"

We live in a world of cause and effect. All manifestations, everything we see, touch, feel, taste, or hear is an effect. What we see comes from that which we do not see. It's the invisible that creates the visible. It's the invisible that causes all of the manifestations in our lives. And depending on how we deal with the invisible things, we are able to create prosperity and happiness… or pain and misery.

This is where our mindset comes in. Our minds are capable of producing results and actions based on our dominant thoughts. So if you want to be happy, healthy and prosperous then you need to make sure that you have the right mindset.

How do you know if you have the right mindset?

This answer is simple: If you are not happy with how you look or feel about yourself right now, then you have the wrong mindset. Our bodies are the most important asset we have and it is imperative to keep them healthy and strong. Look after your body like you would a brand new car: enjoy it, but also maintain it. Respect your body and it will pay you back tenfold.
"We reap what we sow" says the old adage. So if we want to attract prosperity, and be happy and healthy, we first have to create the mindset.

How do you create the mindset?

Mastermoves has developed the 100 Day Challenge to help you create the mindset for fitness and prosperity. This challenge requires your commitment and discipline to exercise for 100 consecutive days. Once you complete this challenge, you will gain the confidence, discipline and commitment that you need to ACHIEVE SUCCESS IN YOUR LIFE.

 You Are What You Eat

Avocado Soup
For a Lean & Strong Body

This thick, clean-tasting soup cries out "tropics"--bright plumage with the bite of pepper and lime. Chances are you won't be able to find the creamy avocados from Peru, but buttery Haas avocados are just as good. Serve this to 4 people as a healthy main course.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- 2 very ripe avocados
- 1 cup of chopped spinach (rinse it before chopping)
- 4 cups cold chicken or vegetable stock
- 2 Tablespoons lime juice
- 1 Tablespoon plain yoghurt
- 1 Tablespoon of fresh coriandro (finely chopped)

salt and black pepper
Garnish: 4 paper-thin slices of lime

Dump the avocado flesh into a blender and puree. Add the stock and continue processing until smooth. Blend in the lime juice, yoghurt, spinach, salt and pepper. Refrigerate for at least one hour.

When ready to serve, spoon into bowls, top each with a thin lime slice, and sprinkle a bit of coriandro over each portion.

  JOKE OF THE WEEK

My Dog Named Sex

Everybody who has a dog calls him Rover or Lassie. I called mine Sex. Now Sex has been very embarrassing to me. When I went to City Hall to renew his dog license, I told the clerk I would like to have a license for Sex. He said "I would like to have one too" then I said "but this is a dog" He said he didn't care what she looked like. Then I said "but you don't understand I have had Sex since I was 9 years old. He replied that I must have been quite a kid.

When I got married and went on my honeymoon, I took the dog with me. I told the hotel clerk I wanted a room for me and my wife and a separate room for Sex. He said every room in this place is for sex. I said "you don't understand. Sex keeps me awake all night" and the clerk replied "me too".

I entered Sex in a contest, but before the competition began, the dog ran away. Another contestant asked me why I was standing there looking around. I told him I had planned to have Sex in the contest. He told me that I could have sold tickets for that "but you don't understand, I hope to have Sex on T.V." He called me a Show off.

When my wife and I separated we went to court to fight for custody of the dog. I said "Your honor I had sex before we were married". The judge said "me too". Then I told him that after we were married sex left me. He replied "me too".

Last night Sex ran off again. I spent hours looking around for him. A cop came over and asked me "What are you doing wandering around the alley at 4 am for?" I replied "I am looking for Sex" My case comes up in court on Friday.
